Project Description Sited on the southeast edge of Galveston’s West Bay, this oyster aquaculture center deploys a patterned duplication of continuous semi-conditioned space and discrete rooms across two levels to generate an effective convergence of industrial and educational programs. With consideration of the climatic risk of the surrounding environment as well as the sensitivity and mechanical loads of aquacultural equipment, the ground level encloses the spawning lab, broodstock lab, hatchery, nursery, and algae facilities within individual chambers. In these discrete rooms, privacy and separation are afforded to employees as they perform specialized tasks, while the external continuity of unconstrained open space allows the circulatory flows of visitors and workers to intermix. By assimilating work and learning, this organization of space challenges conventional expectations of conventional spectatorship.
